E-Learning in Mathematical Subjects (ELMS) was a seminar series at Nottingham Trent University between 2005-9. ELMS aimed to appeal to a wider range of subject areas and allow discussion on issues in mathematical e-learning that are shared over a range of diverse disciplines. ELMS was organised by Peter Rowlett, David Fairhurst and Pete Bradshaw at Nottingham Trent University. ELMS was set up in November 2005. In summer 2006 ELMS received funding from the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications through the Small Grants Scheme. This was to support ELMS and allow talks to be placed online for wider dissemination. Webspace for ELMS videos was provided by the Higher Education Academy Maths, Stats and OR Network until 2012 when these were placed on a YouTube playlist.
ELMS was supported by:
Prior to 2007 ELMS talks were recorded using digital camcorders and edited using iMovie HD (in Mac OS X), processed through Riva FLV Encoder (in Windows) (which uses the cross-platform ffmpeg) to FLV (This method was the subject of ROWLETT, P.J., 2008. A quick and easy (rough and ready) method for online video. MSOR Connections, 8(2), pp. 44-45). From 2007-9 talks were recorded and edited by Chris Shaw of Nottingham Trent University Visual Services. Prior to 2012, ELMS talks were presented online in the Flash Video format (FLV) format using the Flash Video Player. In 2012 these were moved to a YouTube playlist once YouTube allowed longer videos.
A list of all previous talks, including those which were not recorded, is available for reference. Those for which video is available can be found on the videos page.
